Dr. Emily Soiney Iverson grew up in a family of health care professionals. Her youngest sister has a physical disability which introduced Emily to the world of rehabilitation at a very young age. She graduated from Oregon State University in 2001 with a Bachelors in Science in Exercise and Sport Science and a Bachelors in Arts in International Studies with a Spanish minor. She went on to earn her Clinical Doctorate of Physical Therapy (DPT) degree from the University of Minnesota in 2004. She worked with individuals of all ages with primarily neurological impairments in both clinic and aquatic setting before returning home to Oregon in 2006. She worked at an outpatient orthopedic clinic for three years before creating Shine in June of 2009.

Dr. Emily is a board-certified physical therapist and holds certifications as a Craniosacral Therapist (CST-T) with the Upledger Institute and as a Postural Restoration Certification (PRC) with the Postural Restoration Institute®. She was the first physical therapist in Oregon to pass the extensive PRC exam which established her clinic as the first Certified Postural Restoration Center® on the West Coast. Since 2007, she has attended extensive coursework by the Barral Institute for Visceral and Neural Mobilization, The Masgutova Neurosensorimotor Reflex Integration Method (MNRI®), and the North American Institute of Manual Therapy (NAIOMT). In 2015, she was honored to be one of only seven physical therapists as a Top Doctor in Portland in the Portland Monthly.

Dr. Emily began studying yoga in 1998 to assist in recovery from her own chronic pain. In 2004, she began teaching as a registered yoga teacher (RYT) and has guest lectured a number of anatomy and therapeutic yoga workshops at local studios. Dr. Emily also owned the Shine Yoga Studio in Portland from 2011-2015, but had to close the doors in order to focus on her recovery from a motor vehicle accident. Fortunately, this time still allowed her to develop an integrative therapeutic yoga curriculum and presented this curriculum to a national audience in 2015 through the Postural Restoration Institute®.

In her free time, she enjoys studying anatomy, reading, knitting and being outside, especially if it involves studying native plants and medicinal herbs. A lifelong athlete, Emily was one of the first girls in Oregon to compete in pole vaulting, mountain bike racing and triathlons. In college, she taught weight training to women, rock climbing, and spinning classes while competing in water polo and training yoga. She stays active by practicing yoga, swimming, rowing, spinning, weight training and taking Barre and Zumba classes. Her favorite weekend activities are cooking and hiking with her wonderful husband Josh.

Personal Trainer, Physical Therapy Aide

I assist Shine PT clients when I am not training my own clients for personal training. I have been training individuals and groups for over 5 years. I have been working with Emily to regain my own alignment before trying to add strength. This was the key to relieve my chronic pain!

My own personal journey has helped me develop the skills to help others feel confident with the transition of their physical therapy to a fitness. I am passionate about helping people achieve their goals by connecting to their body awareness. I believe it is possible to return to the healthy movement that you love. I look forward to working with you and helping you bridge your physical therapy routine back to your fitness routine!

Bandit, Therapy Support Dog- In Memoriam

With a tear in my eye and a fullness in my heart, I am writing to let you know that Bandit gracefully passed on October 10, 2022 after a brave battle with cancer. He graciously served on my therapy team longer than anyone else and I am still proud to report that he was the best CFO (Chief Fluffiness Officer) I’ll ever have. Years ago, Bandit earned the highest level of certification as a therapy dog team through Pet Partners and he loved to come to work. He would happily greet clients, walk them back to their treatment room, and offer a furry head to pet. Bandit was equally good at providing relaxing sighs during a manual therapy session as he was with laying down next to you for moral support while you learned a new exercise. Bandit especially loved kids and helped our youngest clients feel comfortable by acting as a leg bolster if they need to lie down for a treatment. He always lived up to his name and “stole” your heart! You are deeply missed, sweet boy.
